Abstract

To provide food for all is big challenge. Therefore, new management strategies and technologies are needed to meet the needs of food for a huge population. With significant increase in population the demand of fruits and vegetables also increases. This challenge can be well taken care of by using novel biotechnological means. Genetic engineering is one of the emerging modern biotechnological tool which consist of genetic manipulation, is based on recombinant DNA technology. Marker assisted breeding is used in efficient introgression of important genes into various crops, which helps in easier and faster selection of desired traits. Herbicide resistant crops has been developed by transferring the gene encoding EPSPS from glyphosate-resistant E. coli into plants such as Soybean, Tobacco, Petunias led to increase in crop yields
