Studies were conducted to determine the correlation between the physical and chemical characters of jamun (Syzygium cumini). Fruits from each of 20 trees in Uttar Pradesh and 5 trees in Uttarakhand (India) were collected and observations for physical parameters (fruit weight, average fruit size, seed size, seed weight, pulp: seed ratio and pulp percentage, among others) and chemical properties (total soluble solids, acidity, TSS : acid ratio, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars, sugar:acid ratio and ascorbic acid) were recorded. The estimates of correlation coefficient between all possible pairs of physico-chemical characters of fruits were worked out. Results showed major significant correlations for pulp weight, fruit volume, fruit size and pulp: seed ratio. Highly significant correlations were also recorded for TSS and acidity along with seed size for the various jamun genotypes.
